Economy

ACEC is at a critical juncture in their lobbying efforts on the transportation bill and need your help. The current extension of federal surface transportation programs and funding under SAFETEA-LU runs through September 30, 2011. Unless Congress acts before then, federal payments for highway and transit projects will cease, and the gas tax and other user fees supporting the Highway Trust Fund will lapse. Failure to extend federal surface transportation programs would be a devastating set-back for the economy and have drastic consequences for state and local transportation programs that rely on federal funds.

As we saw with the recent two-week lapse in FAA funding, we cannot take these “routine” extensions for granted. Extending the program is not only critical for ensuring that projects continue uninterrupted, but is a necessary step in providing Congress the time it needs to complete work on a new multi-year bill to replace SAFETEA-LU. ACEC has deployed its full lobbying resources in Washington on this issue, and they are working closely with a large coalition of industry partners to get Congress to act.

We now also need your help. Please take a moment to contact your House Members and Senators to urge them to take action in September to prevent the shutdown of critical highway and transit projects, as well as pass a new long-term program to address the nation’s surface transportation needs. Click on the link below and use KCI’s Political Action Center to automatically send an email to your Representative in the House and your Senators. This is a very important issue for KCI and the whole transportation industry. Now is the time to let Congress know how important it is to extend federal transportation funding and pass a bill establishing a new long term transportation program.

Thanks,
